I studied several birds while doing the 100 day project, focusing on ones with different character. To really understand them, I took out several textbooks from the library and read up on specific groups, their behavior and unique adaptations. I also watched video in addition to gathering photo references–one must be careful the capture the character of the animal and that means seeing it in motion or life whenever possible!
The smaller osprey page was done in a loose pencil. I was surprised by day 5 how limber my sketching muscles seemed to get so quickly! I’m often way too tight, it was nice to experiment with looseness,.
